EXAM REVIEW Acticvities - blanks posted/provided daily, completed samples will follow a day later
Students who do each activity AND check it against the completed samples (or have it checked by their teacher) will be well prepared for both the multiple choice and applicaiton sections of the exam on Janu 18th and 19th.
Activity 1- art history flash cardsPrint off the page (or pick it up from Ms. Cave), cut the images apart and use your notes to label the artist on the side with the image and the title on the back. An extra helpful way to learn them is to use three colors of paper/ink to further categorize the works.
|
Activity 2 - contour drawing & value scalesIn your sketchbook (or on the handout) practice a contour drawing (just line, no shading in with values, using a variety of different kinds of lines). Try your hand, your shoe, a small 3-D object. Try pencil, pen, crayon. Try using only 1 line, 2 lines or as many as you want. Remember: outlines, edges and details done so SLOW and so CAREFUL!

Final Projects (2) and Blog December 5- January 13th
Students will select, research, plan and create two projects from the menu provided. The objective is for the student to SHOW great improvement of at least one art skill in each well planned and successful project. Both projects must exceed the typical sizes of 6 x 6" and 9 x 12" that we worked in for the majority of the semester. Each project must have a blog that discusses how the student selected, researched, planned, practiced and completed the project. Additionally, the blog must FEATURE the skill that has shown improvement via sektchbook studies and an embedded or linked tutorial video. One blog can just show images, the other must have a video, too.
IMPORTANT part of the blog: how did you think your way through the project? In what ways were you creative? How did your choices and creativity lead to you producing ORIGINAL, PERSONAL expressions in your final projects? All projects and blogs are due January 13th. Follow our Twitter @AFHSVisualArts to see works in progress. |

Drawing & Language of Art started on 9-12-16
Drawing - Week of 9-19... Project 1, Value, Value Scales and Composition tips
Quiz #2 will be September 28 - on Drawing and Language of Art
9-23: HAPPY FRIDAY!
1- Composition Tip #4: When it comes to color - 3 or 4, but no more. This deals with both Harmony and Variety - too many different colors creates disharmony with too much variety. One way to ensure HARMONY with VARIETY is to repeat one color using several different shades, tints or versions of that color! 2- Complete and TURN IN on the wall your Value Scales. Nathan's are a good example -------------> 3- LAST hour in class to work on Project 1! You will have access to school computers today and Monday (for 1/2) the class to complete and submit the blog. But remember there are only 10 in the room! DO NOT WAIT until Monday to start the blog. |
9-22:
1-Continue working (2nd hour) on final version of Project 1. 2- Value Scales - Due today - mini demo on Stippling and Scumbing. Time to finish and hang on wall. 3- Composition Tip #3 : AVOID THE DEAD MIDDLE Its Called the Dead Middle for a Reason - It's dead. This is about using contrast (of value, shape, texture, etc) to create EMPHASIS, but slightly off center as movement DIES if its dead center. |
9-21:
1- Start final version of project TODAY! approx 1 hour of class time is devoted to project work. 2- The remainder will be on Crosshatching demo (see right) and 3- Composition Tip #2: AVOID EXTREME DIAGONAL lines as they create rapid MOVEMENT that our eyes cannot stop. Many of the Zinnia drawings used extreme diagonals and were terribly balanced. |
9-19: Working time to complete practice sketches of students chosen subject for Project 1
Drawing - week of 9-12.... remember quiz #1 is on Thursday
|
9-12: we work on observational drawing while the methods of sketching( contour, gesture and whole-to-part are introduced) Students will practice sketch 4 zinnias or weeds in their sketchbook and turn in the final (5th) one on the board assessed on selecting & careful y using line, shape, form, value, color and possibly space and texture
|
9-13 & 14 Below you will find the 3 (THREE) assignments for class on Tuesday. Do them ALL in your sketchbook. Ms. Cave will take a process grade (classwork) on whether or not it is complete on the 14th.
9-14 - complete what we started 9-13 and attempt a Giraffe or Elephant!
9-14 - complete what we started 9-13 and attempt a Giraffe or Elephant!
Part 1: Contour drawing of your hand: fist, peace sign and 1 of your choice.
Watch and re-watch the video(s) to see how its done - put all of Part 1 and Part 2 on the SAME page of your sketchbook. |
Part 2: Contour drawing of your hand holding a school supply. You will do two of the hand holding the same object but in two different positions.
Watch and re-watch the video(s) to see how its done - put all of Part 1 and Part 2 on the SAME page of your sketchbook. |
Part 3: Drawing a 1" grid
This is done in your sketch book and will be 1 of 4 done this semester. The objective is to draw a 7" square filled with a 1" grid, making a total of 49 1" squares inside the large 7 x 7" square,. Watch the tutorial and get it done NEATLY. IF you finish all 3 parts of today's lesson - fill 10 of the squares with line designs in 3 media creating different looking kinds of lines |
Part 4 - done 9-14-16
Giraffes and Elephants: using what we now know about gesture, contour and whole-to-part - attempt a previously unknown subject... a giraffe or elephant! Do your best to use the sighting pointers Ms. Cave demonstrates about how to draw from a printed image.
Giraffes and Elephants: using what we now know about gesture, contour and whole-to-part - attempt a previously unknown subject... a giraffe or elephant! Do your best to use the sighting pointers Ms. Cave demonstrates about how to draw from a printed image.
9-15: Quiz day and contour inspired faces!
We will start with a Quiz and end with face studies! Remember, any student who is displeased with their quiz grade CAN sign up for a STAR lunch retake. Quizzes are assessments. Assessments are 20% of your total grade.
After the Quiz.... Get out at least 5 drawing media (no paint yet). Head ONE page in the sketchbook- Contour inspired faces. Your task is to draw one face from your table every 7 minutes. You need to arrange with your peers to agree to a look/draw/look/draw rhythm. So that everyone looks for a few seconds, then draws and repeat. Do at least 3 sketches THEN take a selfie and draw yourself. Keep to simple lines. They will look distorted and over generalized at first, but later we will make them interesting quick portraits,
9-16: Project 1 guide sheet and Art History Set 1
students will have the "artistic problem" for Project 1 revealed to them as well as guidelines on how to execute a fantastic project and earn high marks. Additionally, the first art history set (images 1-5) will be taught focusing on the language of art.

Exploring the Studio QUIZ Week of 9-15-2016
Taking risks - are they a requirement of a creative individual? How can one become comfortable trying new things if you aren't sure you understand it, you'll like it or be successful at it? The first 8 days of class are all about learning the studio and the kinds of behaviors needed to be successful as an art student in Ms. Cave's studio. Yes we will get to in depth projects, but that will be later.. First you need to impress me by working hard, trying more than once before saying something is done right, managing your time, working with others, using an artist's sketchbook/journal, and documenting your learning. The way things are done in this studio may be very strange at first. I expect you to ask a lot of questions. I want you to try 100 different things to get one great result. I am hurt if you can't fill your class period with work. I am happy if you look up and say "is class over already?" when I announce time to clean up and reset the studio. if you find you leave with more questions than you arrive, you are doing fine!
The studio activities for the first two weeks of class are below. You are expected to finish all 8. On time. Work hard!
Only activities #2 & #3 are "turned in." Look for instructions on how to do that in the activity sheet.
Activities # 5, #7 & #8 must be done on certain days. Those are designed as whole class activities and will be done as follows: #5 on 9/2, #7 on 9/8 and #8 on 9/9. The rest may be done in any order you wish.

Unit 4: Mixed Media & Depth
Depth: From Observation to ArtworkProject is due on Edmodo Thursday 5-19-2016.
Notes:
Depth is created using aerial perspective or linear perspective. Sketch Assignment #9 is one type of linear perspective using a single vanishing point. It is known as 1 point perspective. There are also 2 and 3 point perspectives (maybe more!). In linear perspective, orthogonal lines link to a vanishing point to establish the depth edges of subjects in the image (those that go back into space, while horizontal and vertical lines established on the front face of the building, wall, box, remain parallel or perpendicular to each other. Aerial perspective is what we used in the Still Life value project (3 apples and a plate). In that case the depth is generated by overlapping, size and placement and enhanced by the values used to create the illusion of form. A good linear perspective drawing will use overlapping size and placement as well. Assignment: We will be working with perspective (linear or aerial or a funky combination of the two) in the second to last work of the semester. The work must be done from observation, not a photo however. so think of a place in the classroom, the hallway outside my room or the sidewalk along the patio that you'd like to draw. you will have 3 class periods to complete a practice sketch in your sketchbook and the under drawing for the final (needs to be sized for an 11 x 14 picture format (horizontal or vertical is your choice). Remember how to use sighting to help you position objects, how to use a viewfinder, even how to divide a composition into a simple grid to aid in the sketching/transferring process. Then you will have 3 additional class periods of work with free choice of any media or combination of media you'd like to work in before the critique. The final work will be due physically and in Edmodo on Thursday May 19. Mixed Media: Stipple/Text projectThis was a BIG project and should show me ALL you know about choosing images, words, and media as well as how to combine techniques and applications of a variety of media into a good artistic composition. The goal was that the image and words meld to become greater than the sum of their parts- that your project expressed YOU in an original artwork.
Example of a good evaluation
Quiz 5 is on 5-11Sketch Assignment #9: Exploring 1 point perspectiveDue 5-9-16 on Edmodo
Find and follow a drawing tutorial on 1 point perspective. Reflection: Post tutorial to Edmodo Annotate the finished work with the following vocabulary: horizon line, vanishing point, orthogonal lines, light source, front face, parallel lines, overlapping Feeling the need for Extra credit? Make your own tutorial video showing how to drawing with 1 point perspective or explaining how the vocabulary terms are illustrated in the finished work. Revisiting work to add media Texture Tile; Remember that one? Well the project will soon be finished and graded. I'm looking to see how you translated a 2-D drawing into a 3-D mixed media sculpture. you will upload your finished work to Edmodo by 5-4 for a project grade.
Post Card to Me 2036
Goal: design a postcard to commemorate an experience YOU'VE had 2015-2016 that you WANT to remember in 2036.
2nd period will be participating in the Visual Art Exchange exhibit May 6 & 7, 2016. 3rd and 4th periods will be installing a sister exhibit as part of the AFHS Visual Art show in late May/ early June. Check out the link to the program with VAE below. |
Rich surfaces and intriguing juxtapositions are the point of mixed media and collage as an art medium. Imagination is key to creating a space where viewers can enjoy, think or question. Learning how to achieve believable depth in art is not an easy task, but one that we will focus on.
Students will explore developing space and depth using mixed media. Quiz on 5-11-16 Week 16: SHOW WEEK (NEED DONATIONS! email Ms. Cave for what to bring if you can help!!!) 9-16: Continue working on Depth project, prepping work for show (grade taken on matte/mount with name tag), info presented about how to write an artist statement. 9-17: Continue Depth project (informal critique of work in progress), formal presentation of project evaluation requirements/deadlines, prepping work for show, accepting donations of food!!!, time to work on May 1 x 1's 9-18: SHOW DAY Lobby of Auditorium 6 - 7 PM tonight! ome people can speak 3-D, some struggle with it. While I guide you through several exercises to become more adept at creating forms and textures, you will stretch your understanding of how to fabricate and make things.
Students will begin to explore 3-D art and make connections between their 2-D ideas and how they look in 3-D. These projects are designed to be the first attempts and will be graded as process, not product. Some info will be on final exam but no formal quiz. Week 7

Unit 2: Drawing part 1
Learning to draw well is often unlearning everything you were "taught" and relearning how to see. The hard part is then draw what you really see by learning approaches to drawing and becoming comfortable/confident with drawing media.
In this unit, students will draw with a variety of media, master value scales, value methods, as well as organic and geometric forms by drawing from observation. By the end of the course, students will complete an original drawing from observation with a full range of values using black drawing medium.

unit 1
Elements of Art: line, shape, form, color, value, texture, space
Principles of Design: Balance, Movement,Harmony, Variety, & Emphasis SNOW DAY UPDATE 1-25-16 !!!!
PLEASE watch the Janet Echelman video (will post on Edmodo as well) and view the Principles of Design ppt. Take notes on both in your sketchbook - don't worry about posting a photo to turn it in - some of you left the elements and line practice at school. BUT I have made a portal to turn in Sketch Practice #1 on Edmodo and you CAN turn that in. Get bored today? Then draw! Start with something you don't already know "how to draw" but is comprised of forms you understand..... a chair, your guitar, the lamp.... choose ONE thing, draw it 5 times! getting better at proportions, details and space each time. No need to "shade" it in, just lines are OK! |
- Time to jump in and get your hands dirty, your imagination dialed up to 10 and your thinker working at full speed. Students will be learning and using the elements and principles of art. Students will create a starting point artwork on day one as well as design nine tiles to demonstrate their knowledge as we complete the unit.

The goal of Beginning Art is to work hard, learn a whole new language, learn to see, solve problems, try AND occasionally fail at new things, express ideas visually... ultimately learn to speak "art." Some will continue to Intermediate level - some will not- but all can be successful.
Your daily goal is to impress me.
