Turn in Project 2-20 & post BLOG by 11:59 PM on 2-20Studio Habits: Observe & Developing CraftExplain how you looked closely at the subject and the skills you learned/developed/practiced in our Drawing Unit to help you create the still life. You should write at least 1 good paragraph (4-6 sentences) and BOLD the vocabulary words from the unit you use to describe how you improved these two studio habits. Below you need 3 photos: two showing images from your sketchbook (activities we did to LEARN/PRACTICE the skills) and one detail (zoomed in up close photo) of the BEST area of your final drawing so far that shows how you've used at least ONE of those SKILLS. Reflect & EnvisionWhat are two successes with your drawing so far? Describe them in a couple of sentences.
Most students could have used a little more time to complete their work. IF you were given MORE TIME in class to complete your drawing, what three major improvements would you make? Be detailed and descriptive (use those VOCABULARY words) for each improvement. 1- 2- 3-

Blog Post #1 - process gradeBlog Post #1: What I want from Visual Design Class Due Monday Jan 30, 2017 @ 11:59 PM on Google Classroom Studio Habit: Envision (in preparation for Reflection) Criteria 1- Created blog according to parameters; emailed link on time 2- Post photo of Pre-Assessment project 3- Identify three habits that you need to work on this semester 4- Elaborate on each with two strategies on how to achieve that growth (give supporting details, links, images, etc) 5- Number the sections 1 - 9. Explain HOW you are showing GREAT knowledge of the element/principle featured in each. It Could Look like this *insert a title bar*Insert Text box here & center Title your work Insert text box here FIRST HABIT List one in caps and then provide the two strategies for improving on them here SECOND HABIT Follow with the two strategies that you will hope to use to improve it THIRD HABIT Follow with its two strategies. IF you choose to give supporting images or links I'd insert those to the right of this box so they show up in two columns. See below for idea Details on the Pre-Assessment
FIRST - click "NEW POST" on your original blog page (bottom right of editor page).
Then make the title: Day of the Dead Then insert a photo box and text box
group photo of all three projects (or a series of 3 photos each showing one project)
First Text box: Answer all of these completely and insert a button to use as a reference link to the information used to answer them.
1- What is Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos)? 2- Where and When is it celebrated? by whom? Why? 3- How do your projects (at least 2) celebrate life by acknowledging that death is a stage of life? 4- using the basic elements (tool bar to the left), drag a "button" and set the HTML to the webpage you used to find the information (I want a reputable source, no wikipedia, no buzzfeed, no "infotainment" page.... university, museum, government, cultural pages only!. AND - do not copy and paste - write in your voice, your words! If you quote a small phrase or short sentence, it must be in quotation marks!)
Next - insert two images and a text box for the Sugar Skull Inspired project
SKULL project
In this paragraph describe why you chose the type of skull project you did. Tell how your work is original (inspired by the reference photo, but made all your own). Tell how the project developed your skills: creating pattern with shape/line/color, if used clay - working with subtractive sculpture process, if used cake how you had to think "out side the box" to create the image, etc, Tell how it is obvious that the work is of HIGH QUALITY?
Next - insert two images and a text box for the Bones Inspired project
BONES project
In this paragraph describe why you chose the type of bones project you did. Tell how your work is original (inspired by the reference photo/Georgia O'Keeffe, but made all your own). Tell how the project developed your skills: drawing from observation, creating pattern with line/shape/color, color mixing, values, etc, Tell how it is obvious (provide evidence) that the work is of HIGH QUALITY?
Next - insert two images and a text box for the Miscellaneous project
Miscellaneous Project - pumpkin contest, Day of the Dead a Celebrity, Spook-ify Starry Night
In this paragraph, talk about why you chose this extra project. What about the task was interesting or fun to you? What skills from so far in Art 1 (drawing from observation, color/color mixing, value, drawing forms, sculpture, creative application of medium, etc), did you use to help you complete the project? Did those skills get any better? Explain why or why not. Explain, with evidence, how you know your work is of HIGH QUALITY?
Next - a text box for the reflection and grade
Reflection and Self Assessment
What were two challenges for this project? What are two successes? If you could go back 5 days and redo something to make the group of 3 projects better, what would it be? Why? Explain. The objective was to have 3 HIGH QUALITY projects in which the correct process for project work (research for inspiration/reference images, planning, skill practice and final work done on time) were completed by a final deadline. Do you feel you met this objective? What grade out of a 100 would you give yourself? If each project (including research, planning, skill practice, and final work) counts for 25% and the blog for the last 25%, what grade did you earn?
Discuss all the choices you made in this assignment. Refer to the mini project handout on your desks.
* what fruit you drew * how you chose to take the photos * which media choices you made for the value scales in color * whether you chose to make the work in greys (graphite, charcoal or black ink) or in color (colored pencils, markers, pastels or crayon) * which medium and value method or layers of methods used for fruit (exteriori and interior), table surface and wall surface * which type of paper you chose to draw on: white or grey * which format for mounting the 4 finished drawings on (square or rectangle) Title of photo of finished work
Discuss the finished piece.
Is it representational? Did you layer, transition, blend or use patterning to enhance the richness of the surface of the work or to mimic the actual color/value/texture of the fruit? What did you use and how did you do that? Do you feel the work is Successful, only OK or needs more work to be your best effort? What kind of effort did you give? Was it 100% or something different (think of time ON TASK in class, practicing skills in class and actually working on the project or this blog)? What grade do you think you deserve for this mini project (counts as a double process grade)?
How is it original?
You should talk about drawing from the real life object - taking your own photos - maybe include that photo you took.. This is telling me how you show the behavior of creating original work.
How did your art-making skills develop?
You should talk about practicing the sketching methods of contour, gesture and whole-to-part. Include at least one photo of your practice sketches as evidence that you got better. This is how you show me you have the behavior of developing your art-making skills.
Talk about the ways you explored at least two solutions.
You were asked to take two of your practices sketches and work them up as tiny trials of what you might do to solve the artistic problem. Describe the medium(a) you chose, why you chose it. Talk about what you did to make that choice.: Why one was a better idea than the other. You could include a photo of that tiny trial This is how you show me you are an effective problem solver.
Reflect on your work, its is great, good, OK or horrible. Why? If you were given the chance to redo it, what changes would you make in the planning, the practice, the medium(a) choice, finish? GIVE YOURSELF A GRADE! Out of 100 possible points, what does all your work (planning, practice & project) deserve? Include a photo of the final work that is In FOCUS, well lit, cropped so that I only see the full work (no background), & your signature on the front of the work should be visible.
Make sure you title your work.

This week we've worked hard to draw what we see - zinnias, weeds, our hands, animals and faces... it's not easy. Why? What makes drawing difficult for some and impossible for others? What traits do "good" drawers have? Looking at some of the artistic behaviors I want you to develop over the course of the semester which of the three below applies best to learning to draw what you see and why?
,We jumped right in and started our first unit on day one. I chose to wait on "housekeeping" items like rules, syllabus and how grades are weighted and get right to work. Students are "Exploring the Studio" through September 9th. They will engage in and complete a series of 8 activities that are designed to:
1-Teach students where things are in the studio- what they can use and what they like best 2- Get students to try out new ideas, media, tools and processes- they have the free to just give it a shot 3- Help students learn to juggle multiple assignments 4- Give students a "real world" example of meeting deadlines in my class. 5- Meet their peers- work together- exchange ideas The activities range from drawing to sculpture and art history to dyeing fabric. Each activity is designed to be completed in 1 class period, but students will have more than 8 class periods to get their work done. The last activities is building the website on which they will blog. The blog allows students to detail the process they use to plan, practice and finish projects. The digital display of their thoughts along with images of their work (at various stages in the process) permits be the best platform to gauge student growth. Please check out what we doing on Twitter @AFHSVisualArts. Be on the look out for Art store coupons! Buying the right kind of supplies are essential. Something you can skimp on and others you cannot. For instance, a sketchbook. A hardbound 9 x 12" book is hard to beat. I've met very few spiral bound books that didn't fall apart after being taken in and out of a bookbag for a semester. There are a couple of brands that DO seem to work better than others. This assumes, that you will take care of the book each and every time you open it. All of these books are easy to find at local art supply/craft stores - not a Wal-Mart or Walgreens. USE THOSE COUPONS!
Tuesday, June 14th started my 65 days of summer vacation! I've challenged myself in truly being aware of art all around me, in me and in the greater beyond. So,... what did I find in these first three days: What a cool idea? Painting the fence, my fence could b a wonderful summer activity. An ongoing project. I like this floral. But I'm thinking more doodle... a mandala, something more geometric, concentric designs, etc. Maybe in a few shades of blue, white and orange/red-orange. I have flowers in my yard and butterflies already visit--- the pure design is more my speed. I'll keep you posted as the idea develops. WOW! This idea struck me like lightening. I love self-portraits that explore identity with pattern, locations, imagery rather than just representational renderings of self. Also, I've loved the concept of silhouettes as long as I can remember. My mom had all of our silhouettes done as children and hung in the first house we lived in. I would stare at them. They were simple black paper cut-outs on white background, but each one so clearly defined us as little people. I can see this being an Beginning Art project that frees students to using traditional art forms as well as digital art using Photoshop. I can see assigning students themes of past, present and future or sunrise, noon and sunset. My daughter and I walked Lake Pine trail today. Apex parks marks the trail with small 2' x 2' silhouettes so that you can know where on the trail you are in case of emergency. The yellow butterfly to the left is a fairly good example of how I think they want them to look. However, the simple symbols could use a lot of touch-up. The fish were barely visible and the poor squirrels were repainted backwards on top of the old faded squirrels making a terribly hard to identify woodland creature. My idea? What a GREAT community service project for our National Art honor Society? IF we made wooden stencils that can be stored and used twice a year to refresh the symbols, then we'd be doing the park a service. Hey! It just might lead to other projects at other parks in the town. Another great ART idea!
